How a Reroof Kinked Walk-In Refrigeration Lines in Robinson TX

A new roof is supposed to protect a building. At a Robinson restaurant this month, it took down the walk-in freezer instead. The roofing crew finished, the rooftop looked clean, and soon after, the freezer condensing unit was short cycling and the box was struggling to hold temperature. What Clay Found on the Roof
The restaurant’s walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer both run on rooftop condensing units, with insulated refrigerant lines running across the roof surface and down into the building. During the roofing work those lines had been moved and bent. Clay found the freezer’s suction line kinked, and the cooler’s line had taken the same damage.- Freezer condensing unit short cycling on arrival
- Bubbles in the sight glass, a sign the system was running short of refrigerant
- Kinked suction lines on both the walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer systems
- Defrost timer set to the wrong time of day
- Condenser fan motor making bearing noise
Why a Kinked Suction Line Shuts a Freezer Down
The suction line carries refrigerant vapor from the evaporator inside the box back to the compressor on the roof. Pinch that line and the compressor starves. Suction pressure drops, the unit cuts out, pressure recovers, and the cycle starts again. That on-off pattern is short cycling, and it means the box never gets a long enough run to pull down to temperature. It is hard on the equipment, too. Every restart puts load on the compressor, and a starved compressor runs hot because the returning vapor is what keeps it cool. A kink left in place long enough can turn a line repair into a compressor replacement. Walk-in running warm or short cycling after roof work? Call 254-272-2714. We run 24/7 commercial refrigeration service across the Heart of Texas, and a down freezer gets a tech on the way fast. The Repair
- Cut out the kinked sections of suction line on both the cooler and freezer systems
- Brazed the lines straight through, removing the threaded quick-connect fittings that can become leak points
- Recharged both condensing units with R-404A
- Reset the defrost timer so defrost cycles run at their scheduled times
October Follow-Up: Freezer Condenser Fan Motor Replaced
In early October, Clay went back to the roof and replaced the walk-in freezer’s condenser fan motor that had been flagged during the line repair. The old motor was still turning, but worn bearings do not get better. They get louder, slower, and hotter until the motor seizes. The condenser fan is what pulls outside air across the condenser coil so the refrigerant can shed the heat it carried out of the box. When that fan slows or stops:- Head pressure climbs because the coil can no longer reject heat
- The compressor runs hotter and longer, or trips on high pressure
- The box temperature drifts up, usually on the hottest afternoon of the week
Planning a Reroof? Protect the Refrigeration First
Roofing crews are focused on the membrane, not the copper. Refrigerant lines get stepped on, lifted to slide material underneath, and set back down with a bend in them. Insulation gets torn and left exposed to the sun.- Call your refrigeration contractor before the roofers start so line routes and condensing units can be marked and protected
- Ask the roofing crew how they plan to lift and support refrigerant lines during tear-off
- Have the rooftop lines and units checked once the roof is finished, before a problem shows up as a warm box
- Watch for short cycling, longer run times, or box temperatures creeping up in the days after roof work
