Walk-In Cooler Running Warm in Robinson, TX: Refrigerant Leak Diagnosed and Repaired

April 28, 2026 — Robinson, TX

A commercial walk-in cooler running warm during a busy Central Texas service shift is an emergency. Product loss, food safety risk, and lost revenue all stack up fast. When our technician Clay rolled out to Robinson, TX this week, he diagnosed and corrected a textbook low-refrigerant scenario before it turned into a much bigger problem.

The Symptom: Walk-In Cooler Running Warm

The reported issue was simple but serious — the walk-in cooler temperature was climbing above safe holding range. On arrival, Clay observed the condenser short-cycling and flashing, a classic sign of a low refrigerant charge. Without enough R-404A in the system, the unit can’t pull heat out of the box, and product temperatures start to rise.

The Diagnosis: Leaking High-Pressure Schrader Core

Adding refrigerant without finding the leak is a short-term fix at best. After topping the system off with 4 lbs of R-404A to bring the cooler back online, Clay performed a full leak inspection and traced the loss to a leaking high-pressure Schrader core — a small valve component that’s easy to overlook but a common source of slow refrigerant loss.

  • Verified low-charge condition at the condenser
  • Added 4 lbs R-404A to stabilize the system
  • Performed an electronic leak search across the high and low side
  • Identified the leaking high-pressure Schrader core
  • Replaced the Schrader core and confirmed a sealed system
  • Verified box temperature pulling down to setpoint before leaving

Why a Schrader Valve Matters

Schrader valves are the same kind of small spring-loaded valves you’d find on a car tire — tiny and easy to dismiss. But on a commercial refrigeration system, a worn or damaged core can vent refrigerant slowly for weeks before anyone notices the box isn’t holding temperature. Replacing the core is a quick repair, but only when paired with a proper leak search to confirm there are no other leak points hiding upstream or downstream.

Second Issue: Walk-In Freezer Door Sticking

While on site, Clay also documented a sticking walk-in freezer door. The likely culprit is a failing door frame heater — the resistance wire built into the freezer door frame that prevents condensation and ice from forming and locking the door shut. A new WIF door frame heater has been ordered, and Clay will return on a separate ticket to install it and verify proper door operation.
