When a commercial chiller stops cooling, the first instinct is often the simplest one: clean the condenser coils and get back to business. It is good instinct — a fouled condenser is one of the most common reasons a chiller runs hot. But a coil that looks clean on the surface can still be hiding a problem that no amount of washing will fix. The Call That Looked Simple
The chiller had stopped cooling. The customer had already pulled the obvious lever — they cleaned the condenser coils themselves, expecting that to restore performance. It did not. When our technician Clay returned to the unit, the system had lost its refrigerant charge entirely, and the coils that had just been cleaned were still not moving heat the way they should.
Two Problems Hiding Behind One Symptom
Diagnosis turned up two separate issues stacked on top of each other:
- A failed liquid-line access valve core. The valve core on a liquid-line access port had blown through and vented the entire refrigerant charge. Clay replaced the failed core — plus three additional cores on the system — to eliminate the risk of a repeat failure, then recharged with R410A and confirmed operation.
- An internally restricted condenser coil. Even after the customer’s cleaning, the coil showed a roughly 40 PSI differential between its inlet and outlet. That is not a surface-dirt problem. It is a sign the coil is restricted internally, and cleaning cannot resolve it.
Why a 40 PSI Condenser Differential Is a Serious Warning
A large pressure drop across a condenser coil means refrigerant is fighting its way through a restriction. The downstream effects are predictable and expensive:
- Higher head pressure and higher operating temperatures
- Reduced cooling capacity even when everything else is working
- Added strain that shortens compressor life
- Nuisance trips as high-pressure and temperature safeties react
