What Happened

The Fix

- Confirmed the box pulled back down to setpoint before leaving the site.

A disconnected feed is the obvious version of this problem. The harder version is a circuit that nobody touched at all.
On a September service call at a Central Texas restaurant, a commercial freezer had quit cooling with no warning and no recent work done anywhere near it. Clay ruled out the mechanical side first — compressor, fans, and coil all checked out — and then traced the fault into the control wiring. A section of conductor had been rubbing against metal long enough to wear through its own insulation. Once the bare copper found ground, the control circuit dropped out and the freezer stopped calling for cooling, even though every component it controls was in working order.

- Found the system low on refrigerant and added one pound of R404A to bring the charge back up.
- Confirmed the freezer was pulling down before leaving the site.
Worth separating those last two points. Repairing a chafed control wire does not open the refrigerant circuit, so the pound that went in was replacing a pound that had already left the system somewhere. A charge that has gone missing has gone somewhere, and the follow-up on any low system is a leak search — adding refrigerant restores operation, but it does not fix the reason the charge dropped.
