Most commercial air conditioning failures give you options. A grounded compressor does not.

What a Grounded Compressor Actually Means
A hermetic compressor is an electric motor sealed inside a steel housing, surrounded by refrigerant and oil. The motor windings are insulated so current stays in the windings and never touches the shell.
When that insulation breaks down — from heat, age, contamination, or acid in the oil — current finds a path to the housing instead. That is a grounded compressor, and it is why the breaker trips the moment the unit calls for cooling.
There is no repair for it. The failure is inside a welded steel can. The compressor comes out.
The Test That Confirms It
Lead technician Clay confirmed the diagnosis with a megohmmeter, which applies a high test voltage across the compressor terminals and the housing and reads the resistance of the winding insulation in megohms.
- High reading (good): insulation is intact and current stays where it belongs.
- Marginal reading (caution): insulation is degrading — the compressor is on borrowed time.
- Low or near-zero reading (bad): the windings are shorting to ground. Replace it.
This is a meaningful step, not a formality. Plenty of units get misdiagnosed as low on charge or bad on the contactor when the compressor is already grounded, and a technician who skips the insulation test can burn hours — and your money — chasing the wrong fault.
Why Four Parts Came Out, Not One
The invoice on this job lists a compressor, a contactor, a run capacitor, and a filter/drier. That is deliberate, and it is what separates a changeout that lasts from one that fails again in a season.
- Contactor. Pitted or welded contacts chatter and deliver an unstable voltage to the compressor. That is frequently what stressed the windings in the first place.
- Run capacitor. A weak capacitor pulls the motor out of its designed phase relationship and drives the amp draw up. A new compressor on a tired capacitor is a new compressor running hot from day one.
- Filter/drier. When a compressor grounds, it can leave acid and debris behind in the refrigerant circuit. A fresh drier is what keeps that contamination from migrating into the replacement.
Reusing any of those three to shave the invoice is a false economy. The parts are inexpensive compared to a second compressor.

Recovery, Evacuation, and a Virgin Charge
With the old components out, the remaining work is about what goes back in. The existing refrigerant was recovered rather than vented, the new compressor and drier were installed, and the system was evacuated to pull moisture and non-condensables out of the circuit before charging.
The recharge used virgin R-410A — new refrigerant, not reclaimed — so the charge going into a brand-new compressor is clean and to specification. Operation was then verified before the unit was left running.
That evacuation step is the one that gets rushed most often. Moisture left in a system reacts with the oil, forms acid, and starts the same failure over again. Time on the vacuum pump is cheap insurance on a compressor replacement.
What Operators Can Watch For
A compressor rarely grounds without warning. Ahead of the failure, staff usually notice one or more of these:
- A breaker that trips on a call for cooling and holds fine otherwise
- Run times getting longer to hit the same setpoint through the afternoon
- An outdoor unit that hums and hard-starts before the compressor catches
- A burnt or acrid smell around the electrical panel
