A Waco business called us when its Manitowoc ice machine stopped producing. Clay found the machine shut off, with scale built up at the water distributor and a water inlet valve that was barely trickling water into the unit.

The root cause was upstream. The machine was fed through a charcoal water filter, which is the wrong media for an ice machine. Carbon filters improve taste and odor, but they do nothing to control the minerals that turn into scale. Clay’s recommendation for this application is a dual-head filtration system that pairs sediment and carbon filtration with scale control.

• Removed the incorrect charcoal filter.

May 2026: Failed Supply and Dump Valves on a Vevor

What Each Valve Does

• Water supply valve (inlet valve). Controls when fresh water enters the freezing chamber on each cycle. When it sticks closed or scales up, the unit can’t fill. When it sticks open or leaks past the seat, the machine overflows or short-cycles.
• Dump valve. Releases the mineral-rich water left behind after each freeze cycle so it doesn’t carry into the next batch. A failed dump valve traps that concentrated water in the system, which leads to scale buildup, cloudy ice, slow harvests, and eventually total failure.
