A walk-in freezer that has stopped running tells you something is wrong immediately. A walk-in freezer sitting at 40°F is a quieter problem, and in some ways a worse one — the box looks like it is working, the fans are audible, and the product inside is slowly leaving the safe zone while nobody is watching the thermometer.
That was the call from a Whitney facility this week. The freezer was holding somewhere around 40 degrees, nowhere close to setpoint, and the unit was tripping out on a direct short. Here is how the fault was traced and why the root cause turned out to be mechanical rather than electrical.
A Direct Short Is a Symptom, Not a Diagnosis
When a refrigeration system trips a breaker on a direct short, the temptation is to treat it as an electrical problem and start at the panel. Sometimes that is where it lives. More often, the short is the last event in a chain that started somewhere mechanical, and replacing a breaker or a contactor just resets the clock on the same failure.

What Was Actually Broken
The evaporator fan motor bracket had failed. Once the bracket gave up, the motor assembly was no longer held in its intended position, and the fan blade had broken. The moving assembly then made contact with its own wiring, cut through the insulation, and shorted the circuit directly.
- Presenting symptom: box temperature stuck near 40°F with the unit tripping on a direct short.
- Immediate cause: shorted evaporator fan wiring.
- Root cause: a failed fan motor bracket that let a broken blade and the motor assembly contact the wiring.
This sequence matters for anyone operating commercial cold storage. Evaporator fans do not just move cold air around — they are what makes the coil work at all. When they stop, the coil cannot transfer heat out of the box efficiently, the freezer climbs toward the mid-range temperatures that ruin frozen inventory, and the system keeps running while accomplishing very little.
Getting the Box Cold Again the Same Visit
The correct fix is a new bracket, and one was ordered. Waiting on a part with a freezer full of product at 40 degrees is not a workable answer, so the bracket was welded on site to bring the fan assembly back into position and clear of the wiring. That restored evaporator airflow and got the box pulling back down the same visit, with the permanent replacement bracket to be fitted when it arrives.

Finishing the Refrigeration Side
Restoring airflow addressed the fault that caused the trip, but a system that has been running hard and out of range deserves a look at the refrigeration circuit as well. On the follow-up visit the rest of the work was completed:
- Evaporator coil, condenser coil, and outdoor air filters cleaned.
- Filter drier rewelded.
- System evacuated.
- All valve cores and caps replaced.
- Virgin refrigerant charged back in.
Replacing every core and cap while the system is open is inexpensive insurance. Schrader cores are one of the most common slow-leak points on commercial refrigeration equipment, and a system that has just been evacuated and recharged is the worst possible time to leave a marginal core in place. A clean condenser and clean air filters matter just as much in a Hill County July, when high ambient temperatures leave no margin for a coil that cannot reject heat.
