A walk-in freezer running warm is one of the fastest ways for a commercial operation to lose an entire inventory. What a High Pressure Lockout Actually Tells You
Every commercial refrigeration condensing unit carries a high pressure safety switch. When discharge pressure climbs past a set threshold, the switch opens and shuts the compressor down before the pressure damages valves, windings, or the compressor shell itself.
That means a high pressure lockout is never the problem. It is the system reporting a problem. The switch is the messenger, and resetting it without finding out what pushed pressure that high is how operators end up with the same call three days later — or a failed compressor instead of a tripped switch.
The pressure side of a refrigeration system climbs for a short list of reasons:
- A dirty or blocked condenser coil that cannot reject heat
- A failed or slow condenser fan motor
- Non-condensable gases or an overcharge in the system
- Restricted airflow around the unit — walls, stacked product, or debris
- A condensing unit that is not matched to the evaporator it serves
Step One: Clean the Condenser
The first item on that list is also the most common, so that is where Clay started. The condenser coil was cleaned, the unit was brought back online, and the compressor ran.
On a lot of calls, that is the whole job. Heat rejection is restored, head pressure drops back into range, the box pulls down, and the technician moves on. On this one, it was not. The unit ran, but discharge pressure stayed well above where it should sit for the conditions. Something else was holding it up.
When the Capacities Do Not Match
An evaporator and a condensing unit are engineered to work as a pair. The evaporator absorbs a certain amount of heat from the box; the condensing unit is sized to move that heat load and reject it outside. Manufacturers publish matched pairings for exactly this reason — the two halves have to find a stable balance point together.
Checking the component data on this system turned up a mismatch: a 9,000 BTU evaporator paired with a 12,000 BTU condensing unit. The two sides of the system were never specified to run together, which is a plausible explanation for a unit that rejects heat properly and still cannot settle into a normal operating pressure.

Confirming Before Quoting
A capacity mismatch on paper is a working diagnosis, not a finished one. Before recommending that an operator spend money on new equipment, the pairing is being verified directly with the manufacturer against the published data for both components. If the mismatch is confirmed, the fix is a correctly sized condensing unit — not another cleaning, and not a larger high pressure switch.
That verification step matters. Replacing the wrong component on a mismatched system is how a facility ends up paying twice, and it is why we would rather make a call to the factory than guess. Symptoms worth taking seriously on a commercial walk-in freezer or walk-in cooler:
- Repeat high pressure trips after the coil has already been cleaned
- A box that holds temperature in mild weather but not in July
- Compressors that fail noticeably earlier than they should
- Energy costs that climbed after an equipment swap
Any one of those is worth a diagnostic visit. Together, they usually point at something structural in how the system was put together.
