A commercial walk-in cooler should run quietly in the background. When it starts making a loud noise and throwing sparks at the on–off switch, that is not a refrigerant problem — it is an electrical one, and it needs attention before it takes the whole box down or turns into a safety hazard.
On a recent call at a Waco restaurant, Texian Cold technician Clay arrived to exactly that: a walk-in cooler that had made a loud noise, been switched off and back on, and then sparked at the power switch. The diagnosis was quick once the power pack was opened up.
A Burnt Power Switch on the Walk-In Cooler
The on–off switch feeding the walk-in cooler had burned up internally. Arcing at a failing switch is what produces the sparks and the noise an operator notices — and left alone, a switch in that condition is both a reliability risk and a fire risk. Clay sourced a replacement and installed it the same day.
While he was in the power pack, he also found the contactor running noisy with pitted contacts. A contactor in that shape is a future no-cool call waiting to happen, so it was replaced at the same visit rather than left to fail on the next hot day. He cleaned the return grille while the panel was open.
- Replaced the burnt walk-in cooler power switch — restored safe, reliable power to the box.
- Replaced a noisy, pitted contactor — a cheap part that prevents an expensive shutdown.
- Cleaned the return grille — better airflow, less strain on the system.

One Visit, More Than One System
Commercial buildings pack a lot of equipment into one footprint, and a single service call often turns up more than the original complaint. While on site, Clay also serviced the main air conditioning system:
- Tightened a loose belt that was robbing the unit of efficiency.
- Added 6 lbs of R–410A refrigerant to bring the charge back to spec.
- Replaced all Schrader caps to seal the service ports properly.
One finding was flagged for follow-up: the make-up air unit was not running due to a loss of power between the contacts and the unit. That fault runs back into the building’s electrical wiring, so it was referred out to a licensed electrician to trace — the honest call when a problem sits on the line side rather than in the equipment itself.
Layering preventative work like this into a single visit is the whole point of preventative maintenance — catching the pitted contactor and the loose belt now, instead of during a Saturday lunch rush in August.
