When a commercial walk-in cooler stops holding temperature but the condenser is still humming along, the problem is often hiding in the electrical box — not in the refrigerant. That was exactly the case on a recent Waco service call, where lead technician Clay traced a warm walk-in back to a single burnt connection at the compressor start relay.
The Symptom: Condenser Running, Compressor Hot and Silent
On arrival, the condenser was running normally, but the box was drifting warm. The giveaway was the compressor itself — hot to the touch and not running. A compressor that is energized but cannot start will sit there building heat, and if it stays that way it can fail outright.
Clay opened the electrical compartment and found the cause: burnt wiring at the compressor start relay. Heat and current had degraded the connection until it could no longer pass enough power to kick the compressor into its run cycle.
The Repair: Restoring the Start Circuit
The fix was to repair the burnt wiring and connections at the start relay so the compressor could pull the inrush current it needs at start-up. Once the circuit was sound, the compressor started and ran, and the walk-in began pulling back down to temperature the same day.

Getting the compressor running again was only half the story. With the unit operating, Clay took an amperage reading and found high amp draw on one leg — a classic indicator that the motor windings are beginning to break down internally.
A compressor pulling uneven, elevated amps is on borrowed time. It may run for weeks or months, but the failure is coming, and it tends to arrive at the worst possible moment. A Second Find: Reach-In Freezer Icing Over From a Failed Door
While on site, Clay checked a self-contained two-door reach-in freezer that was freezing up. The root cause wasn’t the refrigeration system at all — the left door had been damaged badly enough that it dropped out of alignment and was no longer engaging the fan switch at the top of the door frame.
With the fan switch never closing, the evaporator couldn’t cycle properly and the coil iced over. As a temporary measure, Clay added foam tape to bridge the gap and set the unit into defrost to clear the evaporator. The lasting fix is a complete new door, which has been recommended to the operator.
